French born Christophe Canato has been a Perth-based artist since 2005, with a practice focusing on exploring male gender roles across diverse cultural landscapes. His work investigates identity, masculinity, and societal expectations through photography and mixed media.

 

In 2023, Canato was commissioned by the City of Perth leading to his latest series, Intrinsèque, which was exhibited at the Perth Council House in 2024 with 15 artworks included in the City of Perth Cultural Collection.

 

With over 60 exhibitions worldwide, Canato’s work has been featured in renowned venues such as the BBA Gallery in Berlin (2023), Espace Vallès in France (2018), Monash Gallery of Art in Victoria (2021), and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra (2018). His solo exhibitions include signifcant shows at the Perth Centre for Photography (2020), Galerie Basia Embiricos in Paris (2017), Anna Pappas Gallery in Melbourne (2014), ION Art Gallery in Singapore, Turner Galleries in Perth, and the Queensland Centre for Photography (2016).

 

Canato has received 11 awards across France, Australia, the USA, and Northern Ireland, and has been shortlisted for 27 prestigious art prizes. His work is held in major public collections such as Artbank and has been widely published internationally, with notable features in outlets such as China’s Photoworld in 2020.
