CITY (a contemporary design and fashion retailer) produced this poster for their Gala Opening for the Memphis Collection in their store on June 13, 1984.
CITY's Gala Opening was the first time the Memphis Collection was seen in the USA as a major collection of furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, and fabrics. Many of the Memphis designers attended the event. The artwork is a collage of found objects, cut paper, plastic and illustration skills: airbrush, crayon and pencil.
In this design, Chris Garland used the famous Picasso sculpture in Chicago Daley Plaza as his modern design reference and the Memphis colour palette that favoured primary hues. Picasso’s untitled sculpture initially sparked great controversy, but today is Chicago’s most loved icons. Garland may have had a similar hope for the Memphis Collection, which likewise faced criticism and controversy when it arrived at the City Store in Chicago.
