“In my work, I'm drawn to the construction of architectures, and more generally to vanishing lines and perspective. My first studio was on the seventh floor beneath the eaves of Paris, and I developed a taste for the breadth of high views. I am interested in the void between forms; I try to define a consistency for this that is as real as tangibles elements. I create my works using oil paint, sometimes right from the tube, and I create compositions in which light is essential.”
Graduating from the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris, Laetitia Demortreux- Velez makes the study of light her main concern. While remaining committed to observing reality, she gradually moves away from figurative representation to simplify forms and break free from strict planes and contours. She also adapts her technique to her research: over the years, her brushstroke becomes broad and structured with wide brushes and palette knives.
The chromaticism of her canvases evolves with her travels, transforming her palette: thus, each study theme defines new colour schemes. As a result of a simultaneously assertive and constantly challenged touch, painting becomes a field of experimentation where she escapes from the anecdotal to focus on the essential, transitioning from sensation to sentiment.
